Part 3: Modern Hospitality – From the Tremont House to Hotel Chains

The early 19th century marked a turning point in the history of travel and hospitality. With industrialization came new forms of mobility, the railway network expanded, and more and more people began traveling for business or personal reasons. This increased the demand and expectations for accommodations.

A major milestone was the opening of the Tremont House in Boston in 1829. It is considered the world’s first modern hotel. For the first time, it combined private rooms with lockable doors, running water, a reception desk, and a dining room. These innovations set standards that are still in place today. The hotel quickly became a model for many other establishments around the world.

Throughout the 20th century, the industry became increasingly professionalized. Hotel chains such as Hilton (founded in 1919), Marriott, and InterContinental emerged. These brands promised a consistent standard—whether you were staying in New York, London, or Tokyo. The concept of branding became central to the hotel industry: comfort, recognition, and trust became key factors for guests.

At the same time, the market diversified. Alongside luxury hotels, budget options, boutique hotels, and spa resorts emerged. Today, in the digital age, people book their hotels online, compare reviews, and choose from a global selection. Yet the core idea remains the same: a hotel is a temporary home. And it has been so for thousands of years.
