The travel and tourism industry is actively working to reduce emissions. The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) introduced the ‘Net Zero Roadmap’ in 2021 to achieve climate targets. The second edition of this roadmap was presented at the UN Climate Change Conference COP 29 in Baku 2024.
According to the roadmap, 53% of the leading 250 companies in the industry have committed to reducing emissions, a third of which are in line with the targets of the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). Travel and tourism is responsible for 6.5% of global emissions, an improvement on 7.8% in 2019.
The updated roadmap emphasises the need for concrete action and provides practical guidance to decarbonise the industry. Leading voices, including WTTC CEO Julia Simpson, call for further progress and commitment.
